The dramatic Warwick Castle is one of the town's biggest draws for visitors. Originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068, this medieval site plays host to seasonal events and other treats.
Although it has ancient origins, much of the centre was destroyed in the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694. Away from the supposedly haunted castle, there are attractive 18th century buildings dotted throughout the town. Indeed, seeing the rebuilt town after the fire, 18th-century writer Daniel Defoe remarked that "few towns in England make so fine an appearance".
